Chapter Nine

“Good afternoon, Lord Windford.”

For whatever reason, Dorothea found her heart beating rather quickly as she greeted Lord Windford. She found herself glad to have stumbled across his path, seeing the warm smile that crossed his lips as he bowed.

“Good afternoon, Lady Dorothea,” he replied, quickly greeting Lady Hayward. “And are you for another walk in the park this afternoon?”

“I am,” she answered, with a small smile. “But this time, it is with Lady Hayward.”

“Not with Lord Ferguson,” he replied, a twinkle in his eye. “I have heard the news that Lord Ferguson is wed.” There came a serious look in his eyes. “You have spoken to one or two acquaintances, then?”

She nodded. “Both myself and Lady Hayward have done so,” she replied, as he nodded approvingly. “I do not think that he will be able to do any such thing again.”

“I am very glad to hear it,” Lord Windford replied. “I thank you, Lady Dorothea.”

“I did very little,” Dorothea answered, although Lord Windford only smiled. Pressing her lips together for a moment, she glanced at Lady Hayward, who gave her a nod of encouragement. “Might you care to walk with me for a short time, Lord Windford?”

They fell into step together, walking through St James’ Park with Lady Hayward only a step or two behind.

“There are a good many things that I have wished to say to you, Lord Windford,” Dorothea began, as they walked alongside each other. “I have found myself less than able to do so, however, what with circumstances and the like.”

“Oh?” He looked down at her, a line forming between his brows. “I do hope that you have no intention of berating me, Lady Dorothea,” he continued, a tiny smile on his lips. “I fear that I will be quite broken hearted should you have cause to do so.”

“I have no cause for such a thing, I assure you!” Dorothea replied, making him laugh. “It is only that…” She paused, frowning now herself as she tried to find the right words. “The evening with the maid, I came to realize something of great importance.” Turning her head so that she might look up into his face, Dorothea felt her heart quicken. “You are a very kind gentleman, Lord Windford,” she said, quietly. “No other stepped forward in order to aid the poor maid, who had been treated so cruelly.”

“That is not so,” he answered, gently. “Lady
